This course introduces first-year university students to the fundamental principles of academic writing. Using They Say / I Say as the core textbook, the course emphasises argumentation, clarity of expression, textual analysis, and effective engagement with scholarly conversations. Students will learn how to summarise, paraphrase, construct claims, respond to counterarguments, synthesise sources, and revise their work with purpose. The ultimate goal is to enable students to enter academic discussions with confidence, to think critically, and to express ideas with coherence and precision. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Understand that academic writing is a form of conversation that involves responding to the ideas of others. 2. Summarise and paraphrase texts accurately while maintaining objectivity. 3. Construct clear and arguable thesis statements. 4. Use textual evidence and quotations effectively with proper framing. 5. Respond to opposing viewpoints respectfully and analytically. 6. Synthesise multiple sources into a cohesive argument. 7. Produce well-structured, coherent, and polished academic essays. 8. Engage in thoughtful peer review and revision processes.
