概述

In this course, we treat writing as a series of strategic choices. Students will learn how to reclaim a recognizable voice beyond the generic patterns often produced by AI. The course draws on insights from Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), but it is not a theory-heavy introduction to either field. Instead, we use selected concepts and findings as practical tools for writing: to make agency and stance visible, to shape coherence and emphasis, and to craft prose that is more author-present, audience-aware, and stylistically distinctive. This course will be delivered in English only if at least one student in the class does not speak Mandarin. Otherwise, the course will be taught bilingually: core materials and writing will be in English, with explanations provided primarily in Mandarin. 加簽規定:此課程使用教室較小,人數上限為18人,超過此人數會導致課程品質不佳,除非有同學退選,否則此課程不接受加簽。

教學方式

1. AI policy This course is about reclaiming your voice from AI-generic writing. If you use AI to generate or rewrite an assignment, I will treat that as your choice to submit a generic, widely shared AI style—and grade it accordingly. Under this course’s style-focused criteria, that kind of generic AI prose will be unlikely to receive a high score. That said, this course is not anti-AI. What matters is the writing’s voice, stance, and stylistic specificity. Generic AI defaults will not score well, but AI can still be used effectively. If you use thoughtful prompts and revisions to co-write with AI in ways that preserve (or sharpen) your own authorial presence, your work can still earn high marks. Ultimately, your grade depends on how you collaborate with AI, not whether you use it. 2. Disability Adjustment Policy Students who require accommodations should meet with the instructor and finalize an accommodation plan no later than the end of Week 2. Requests submitted from Week 3 onward will not be accepted, as accommodations need to be arranged early to ensure fairness and smooth course operation. 3. Absence and Late-Submission Policy (Weekly Handwritten Exercises) Weekly writing exercises are handwritten and must be submitted in class. No late submissions will be accepted for any reason. If you will miss class, you must submit your handwritten exercise by 10:10 a.m. by placing it in the instructor’s mailbox in the department office. The instructor will collect submissions before class. Any work placed in the mailbox after the instructor has already collected submissions will not be graded. 4. Attendance Note This course does not assign points for attendance. However, the course includes substantial in-class practice and feedback, and weekly handwritten exercise sheets are distributed during class. If you miss class, you are responsible for obtaining the worksheet from classmates (e.g., by borrowing and photocopying it). Please note: unless you have an approved absence filed in advance through the university system in accordance with university policy, do not ask the instructor to provide you with the worksheet after class. This is a basic courtesy to your classmates and to the course process. 5. If you experience a major personal crisis (e.g., the death of a family member or companion animal, a serious breakup, or an unexpected illness such as a high fever), the policies above may be adjusted on a case-by-case basis. In such situations, please contact me proactively to discuss an alternative arrangement. I will not ask you about your circumstances unless you initiate the conversation.

評分方式

- Individual assignments * 2 (20%) - Weekly exercises * 10 (50%) - Group presentation (15%) - Final essay (15%) *Grading & Feedback Policy Grades in this course prioritize authorial presence: a clear voice, stance, and intentional stylistic choices (including agency design, cohesion, and emphasis). Generic, template-like writing—whether AI-generated or human-produced—will not score well under this rubric. Feedback will focus on revision-ready moves. Return time for major submissions is typically 1–2 weeks, depending on workload. All writing submitted for this course must be your own work. Plagiarism—including copy-pasting, patchwriting (close paraphrase without genuine rephrasing), and submitting others’ work as your own—is not acceptable. Any use of sources (articles, websites, social media posts, etc.) must be acknowledged appropriately in your writing. Violations will result in a score of zero for the assignment. When in doubt, cite the source or ask the instructor before submitting. If conflicts arise within your group project, please address them in a mature, professional manner. Please also note that, under applicable laws and university regulations, if you report to me any incident involving bullying/harassment, or sexual harassment/gender equity concerns, I am legally required to make an official report to the relevant university office, which will then conduct an investigation and handle the case. I do not have the professional training, legal role, or authority to investigate or adjudicate bullying or sexual harassment/gender-equity cases on my own.
