It is your first year of college, and you finally broke free from the high school mandatory courses. You are an adult with freedom of thought, movement, and speech. As a young adult with free will, what social issues do you care about now? What are your experiences and opinions regarding the issue? How do you raise awareness and engage with others? In this course, you will address all the above questions with a great speech and a creative idea. You are going to present yourself in an ambassador's manner. The course is in 4 units: introducing yourself, learning from the best, delivering your message, and final action. You are going to learn from good speakers. You will discover the elements of a great speech and create your own. You will help your classmates’ speaking skills and learn from their feedback. Finally, you will present all you acquire throughout the term in the final exam.
Students will discuss an issue in class weekly. Everything is going to be posted in Google Classroom. Attendance: ◦ If you should be absent from class, you must notify me by email. You may take up to 3 leaves per semester. Every leave after the third time will result in 2 points off the final grade. ◦ If you do not obtain an official leave, each absence will result in 2 points off the final grade. ◦ I will do a roll call each class. If you are late, each time will result in 0.5 point off the final grade. Showing up 20 minutes after a class starts is considered absence. ◦ If you disappear during the class, such as taking a long break for more than 20 minutes, you are considered absent. Participation: ◦ Participation takes up 15% of your final grade. Speak up as much as you can in each class. Look at what consists of the grading of participation. ◦ Each time you speak up in class, 0.5 to 1 points will be added to your participation score. ◦ The first-half-of-semester participation score will be shown to you during midterm. Delay of assignment: ◦ Each delay of the assignment will result in 20% off the assignment. Four days after the deadline will result in another 20% off. ◦ If you don't show up on your presentation, the assignment will be graded 0.
