The area known as the Middle East today is the cradle of human civilization, rich with cultural and linguistic diversity, and for a while was the world's center for great learning and scientific discoveries. It is also where the three Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—came to form, but when reaching the modern times, they become one of the causes of political strife and even more so with western interventions. It is against this backdrop that films made in this area are selected for view. They will be introduced according to the following themes: "The Arab Spring" (Egypt), "The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict," "Western War Interventions" (UK and US), "The Displaced" (Iraq and Lebanon), "Islam and Woman" (Iran and Saudi Arabia), "Justice" (Lebanon and Iran), and "Reconciliation" (Türkiye). Among the 14 films this class assigns, 5 are made by 6 women. At least 2 films will be shown in the DCP format, whereas the rest shall be in Blu-ray if available. All come with the English subtitles. Students will be required to watch a film in class each week and join the live discussion after viewing. There are midterm and final examinations on the films and assigned readings. In lieu of the final, students may choose to write either a screenplay or a term paper (5 to 7 pages in length) when permission is granted. Other weekly assignments include (1) film logs (up to the midterm), (2) online responses (after the midterm), and (3) quizzes on the assigned readings (the entire semester). All lectures, assignments, and class discussion will be conducted in English. No knowledge of any language used in the Middle East is required.
