Silicon photonics is an emerging technology that integrates electronics and photonics to create powerful and highly functional electronic–photonic integrated circuits for a wide range of applications. It draws on interdisciplinary knowledge spanning photonics, electronics, materials science, and semiconductor engineering. This course focuses on: (a) understanding the operating principles and underlying physics of key active and passive devices required for silicon photonic circuits; (b) fabrication approaches and integration technologies; (c) the design and modeling of silicon photonic circuits, (d) important applications for silicon photonics.Practical tape-out of silicon photonic circuits will also be covered. Through hands-on projects, students will acquire the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to design and develop silicon photonic technologies.
Possession of basic knowledges on wave optics and semiconductor fabrication.
• Homework assignments: 50% • Course final project: 50% *Based on the actual teaching and assessment circumstances, the instructor reserves the right to make final adjustments to the grading. However, the final score will not be lower than the score specified above.
