Overview: The course serves as an overview of some of the major frameworks in theoretical phonology, contrasting rule-based and constraint-based approaches. Throughout the course, we will read academic papers in phonology, and evaluate the evidence and arguments presented therein. Note that because this is an English-mediated course, all course components and requirements will be in English. Learning Outcomes: - Understand the theoretical underpinnings of current phonological theory - Analyze phonological data in a variety of theoretical frameworks - Solve phonological problems from a variety of languages - Communicate at an academic level in written and spoken form - Conduct independent research in phonology and engage with the appropriate literature
Policies and Regulations: Academic Integrity: The work submitted in this course should reflect the abilities and efforts of the student. Representing the work of others as your own constitutes an academic offense. The use of generative AI to misrepresent your understanding of the material is not permitted. Copyright: © Instructor-generated course materials (e.g., slides, handouts, conference materials, assignments, quizzes, exam questions, answer keys, etc.) may not be copied or distributed in any form or in any medium without explicit permission of the instructor.
Course Components: In-Class Exercises (36%): You will be required to submit your answers to weekly in-class exercises. The exercises are each worth 3% of the final grade and should be submitted before you leave. The exercises are meant as a low stakes opportunity for students to earn credit and, as such, will be chiefly graded for completeness. Participation (10%): As a graduate student, you are expected to actively contribute to the classroom discussion. This can take the form of questions, clarifications, or relevant comments during lecture itself or in response to regular discussion prompts. Final Paper and Presentation (29%): The final paper for the course is due on the last day of the semester. The topic of the paper is up to the student. However, the paper must contain an original analysis of phonological data or else an original discussion of some aspect of phonological theory. Additionally, the paper should engage with relevant sources not covered in class. The students will be expected to submit a brief proposal of the topic, including a list of the relevant sources by April 21st. In the final lecture of the semester, you will be required to give a short presentation about your paper topic to the class. The paper is worth 15% of your final grade, while the presentation is worth 10%. The paper proposal is worth 4%. Students are welcome, and strongly encouraged, to consult with the instructor about their topic before getting to work. Final Exam (25%): The final exam will be held in class during the penultimate lecture of the semester and will cover topics from the entire course as well as the readings. Evaluation: Your overall course grade is calculated as follows: component weight Exercises (x12) 36% Participation 10% Final Paper 15% Final Paper Presentation 10% Final Paper Proposal 4% Final Exam 25%
