概述

This course aims to investigate the syntax and semantics of reduplicated adjectives in Mandarin Chinese and Chinese dialects in order to show what empirical and theoretical impacts Chinese and Chinese dialects can impose on the study of tropes and degrees in natural languages. First, we will introduce the basic syntactic and semantic properties of Chinese and Chinese dialects under the framework of principle and parameter approach and formal semantics. Second, students will be asked to read some selected previous studies on the notion of tropes, degrees and Chinese reduplicated adjectives and, by doing so, we want to show how syntax and semantics induce our curiosity on the human cognitive system and why languages are interesting and deserve study.

Those who are willing to explore academic research are encouraged to apply; having a background in formal syntax and formal semantics is especially beneficial.
