This course investigates sound change in Taiwan’s languages from both phonetic and phonological perspectives. We will focus on Taiwan Mandarin, Taiwanese Southern Min, Hakka, and Formosan Austronesian languages, examining their unique sound patterns and ongoing phonological changes. Through close reading of recent empirical studies, we will explore phenomena such as nasal coda mergers in Taiwan Mandarin, tonal duration reflexes and sandhi in Taiwanese Southern Min, and the shifting boundaries of sibilant contrasts. We will also engage with broader issues of dialect contact, generational variation, and articulatory–acoustic bases of sound change, situating Taiwan’s languages within cross-linguistic perspectives.

- Squib (short paper): Each student will write one squib presenting an original analysis of some aspect of phonological change in Taiwan’s languages. A proposal outlining your topic will be required (date to be announced). You will also give an in-class presentation of your work-in-progress during the final week. The final version of the squib will be due one week after your presentation. - Reading preparation and discussion: Students are expected to complete the assigned readings before class and actively contribute to discussion each week. Each student will be responsible for leading the discussion of at least one assigned reading during the semester.
