This graduate course (open to undergraduates) examines speculative fiction as a mode for reimagining race, gender, sexuality, reproduction, and humanity in relation to the nonhuman. The selected texts trace a historical and thematic trajectory: H. G. Wells’s The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896) extrapolates from late Victorian vivisection to imagine a world in which species boundaries can be surgically rewritten; George Schuyler’s Black No More (1931) satirizes Depression-era racial ideologies through speculative science; John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids (1951) depicts ecological catastrophe and mutant plant life amid Cold War fears about human survival; and Torrey Peters’s Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones (2016) envisions trans futurity and community in an altered, post-apocalyptic world. Students will read these works alongside theoretical and critical essays in order to explore how speculative writing mirrors, critiques, and reconfigures dominant social and scientific imaginaries. The readings are subject to change. The final version will be updated in mid-February.

Weekly Responses Students are required to submit ten brief responses (50–100 words each, in different weeks) to the assigned primary and/or secondary readings. Each response must be posted on Dropbox at least twelve hours before class. Responses may offer observations, raise questions, or analyze specific passages. Please include page numbers when you refer to the text. Class Participation Active participation is expected from everyone. You may elaborate on your weekly responses, raise new questions, and respond to others’ observations during class discussions. Short Essays You will submit two short essays (1000–1250 words each, double-spaced) in response to our primary readings. Each essay should highlight passages from the text and use them to develop a clear argument. You do not need to cite secondary sources, but they may help you contextualize historical settings, theoretical frameworks, or broader cultural debates. Final Paper The final paper (8–10 pages, double-spaced) should not duplicate your response essays. You may write on the same text(s), but your topic and argument must be substantially different. You are encouraged to build on ideas from your weekly responses or class discussions.
