As a form of computer-mediated communication (CMC) that enables the creation and exchange of user-generated content, social media provides a platform for language learners to connect, communicate, and interact with others. This interaction occurs through various mediums including social networking sites, blogs and forums, media sharing, social news, collaborative authoring, web conferencing, and geo-location based sites. In recent years, social media has been applied in diverse areas of language learning, such as reading, writing, vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, and cultural learning. This course aims to provide an overview of social media research and its applications in language learning and teaching. Part One of the course begins with definitions of both "social media" and "language" and explores their relationship. We will examine the chronological development of social media platforms to illustrate the increasing interactivity and multimodal nature of these interactions. Part Two focuses on research aspects of social media and language learning/teaching. We will cover both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including principles, methods, and steps necessary for conducting research projects in this field. Part Three emphasizes the design and development of appropriate curricula and lessons where EFL learners can interact and negotiate meaning with the assistance of social media. Upon completing the course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the theoretical foundations, ethical issues, uses, and principles of social media in EFL contexts. 2. Analyze current developments and challenges in social media research and language learning. 3. Evaluate social media applications for use in their own language classrooms. 4. Adapt existing social media resources to meet the needs of their learners. 5. Implement strategies to integrate social media into EFL learning environments. 6. Design and develop curricula that enable EFL learners to interact and negotiate meaning through social media.
