概述

We tell stories every day – online and offline – for teaching, branding, persuading, connecting, and making sense of our experiences. And everyone loves a good story. In today's world, the ability to craft compelling narratives – and to critically listen to and evaluate the stories that surround us – is essential. Storytelling is not just entertainment; it is a window into who we are and how we construct our identities. For educators, especially language teachers, understanding how identity is expressed through narrative can enrich classroom practice, support learners' self-expression, and deepen intercultural awareness. This course explores the powerful relationship between identity, language, and narrative. Students will learn analytical tools for examining how identities are constructed and negotiated in and through stories. Topics include levels of identity in discourse studies, approaches to identity analysis, methods in narrative research, and major debates in the field. Students will also collect and analyze narratives aligned with their own interests, including oral, written, multimodal, as well as digital stories from social media and beyond.

先修科目

Although familiarity with discourse analysis can be helpful, it is not required. Students without prior experience in discourse or narrative studies are welcome to take this course.
