The concept of systems engineering originated in the 1950s. Faced with the space technology and arms race of the Cold War, the United States invested in the complex and large-scale Apollo moon landing and ballistic missile development programs. This led to the emergence of "experts" in engineering disciplines, and through a series of engineering practices and the accumulation of experience, systems engineering theory was formed, giving rise to the discipline of systems engineering. This course will introduce the components of various systems from simple to complex, leading to concepts of system attributes, system classification, system structure, and system function. By explaining the many problems faced by complex systems, the necessity of adopting systems engineering approaches will be understood. Furthermore, using the project management problems encountered by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) in developing various types of weapon systems and subsystems, the course covers initial project selection methods, initial system specification definition, subsystem performance specifications and interface definition, system model simulation establishment, subsystem verification and validation, overall system integration testing procedures and test data analysis, failure phenomena and debugging methods, problem-solving methods and verification procedures, etc., to allow students to fully understand the scientific methods for developing large and complex projects. This course aims to illustrate the methods used in systems engineering practice and the numerous regulatory and organizational management issues faced in project management through real-world case studies of the development of various types of manned and unmanned military systems, allowing students to get closer to reality.
1. Capable of using basic simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink. 2.Possessing the ability to construct mathematical models of simple dynamic systems 3.It has a basic understanding of the theories of mechanical mechanisms, motor systems, hydraulic systems, and automatic control systems.
This course begins with physical observation of the underlying system components and hands-on experience with integrated systems (aerial photography and drone operations), allowing students to practically understand how human factors engineering evaluates the performance of complex systems and the interoperability between enabling and physical systems. The first half of the course will use real equipment and dynamic operation to demonstrate the time delay and emergent nature of complex systems. The second half will focus on introducing the integration testing methodologies for complex manned systems, as well as the design principles of related development tools and testing and verification instruments. Finally, the course will introduce the U.S. Department of Defense's weapon system development and procurement management, concluding with a brief overview of the weapon system requirements generation process and the writing of specification documents at each level. This allows students to gain a comprehensive understanding of systems engineering, from requirements development to operational testing and evaluation, in the shortest possible time.
Grading will be based on regular assignments and reports, as well as midterm/final reports. Regular assignments account for 60% of the total grade, midterm reports for 15%, and final reports for 25%. Failure to submit any assignment will result in a score of zero. AI Usage Rules: Completely open for use without attribution. The report's logical structure, depth of content, and ability to observe details during implementation will determine the grade.
