This unit provides a focus on the microstructure of materials. It conveys an understanding of how microstructures undergo changes and highlights the importance of phase transformations in controlling microstructures. Phase diagrams and the key concepts of Gibbs energy and chemical potential are used to explain phase equilibrium and phase stability. You will also learn how diffusion enables changes in the chemical distribution and its impact on microstructure. The effects of temperature, atomic diffusion, driving forces and kinetics on new phase formation will also be explored. Technological important material/alloy systems will be presented to illustrate these concepts and to highlight the importance of controlling material microstructure for engineering design.
