Quantum theory fundamentally changed how we understand the nature around us. Under the term quantum mechanics, we collect concepts such as the Schrödinger equation, wave functions, quantisation conditions, mathematical operators, Hilbert spaces, spin, quantum tunneling, and entanglement, each of them more surprising and exciting than anything we had ever seen before. In this lecture, we dive a little deeper into quantum theory, focusing especially on entanglement and interactions. Interactions hereby in particular mean quantum scattering. By studying quantum scattering theory, we will learn how resonances form and how to interpret experiments that examine the response of materials in condensed matter systems and decays or scattering in particle physics contexts. We will encounter the concepts of scattering phase shifts, partial wave expansions, Riemann sheets, resonances, bound states, and virtual bound states to uncover and understand the properties of hydrogen and other fundamental processes in nature. Adding entanglement into the mix, we will enter the very modern field of quantum information science and quantum computing. Understanding the conflict between Bohr and Einstein about the concept of entanglement and the fate of locality in nature, we will construct and study systems that probe this fascinating property of quantum states. We will learn about qubits, the Bloch sphere, Bell and GHZ states, and how to perform calculations on quantum computers, as a newly emerging technology.
