This course examines the essential issues involved in managing businesses across borders. The objectives of this course are: 1. To understand the structure and underlying nature of the strategic, organizational, and operational challenges faced by executives operating in multiple countries. 2. To understand the interplay among businesses, the countries in which they operate, and the competitive environments they face. 3. To develop students' ability to formulate global strategies and effectively manage across borders.
* Only students who attend class during the first week of the semester are eligible to register for this course. * A strong motivation and genuine interest in international aspects of business strategy are required.
1. Class Participation: Active participation is required and will contribute to your final grade. 2. Attendance: Regular attendance is essential for effective learning and collaboration. Students who lack prior permission for absence and do not appear on the attendance roll will be marked absent. A student who is absent for three or more weeks without prior approval shall receive a failing grade. 3. Classroom Etiquette: Eating and drinking are permitted, provided they do not cause disruption. 4. Academic Integrity: Any form of cheating will result in failure of the course. Plagiarism is considered a serious violation of academic integrity. Students are required to actively participate in group projects. Those who fail to contribute adequately (i.e., free riders) will receive a failing grade. 5. Classroom Conduct: Talking without permission and sleeping during class are strictly prohibited. 6. Mobile Phones: Please turn off your mobile phones during class. Phone ringing during class may negatively affect your final grade.
Description of Course Details: 1. Homework and Assignments: Several study groups will be formed, with each group selecting a company from the Inc. 5000 list (https://www.inc.com/inc5000). Each group will then select an emerging market to conduct a DIGEST analysis, identifying its business opportunities and risks. Each group will present to the class as if they were representing the company and pitching to potential investors. After all group presentations, the class will vote to select the “Most Promising Company,” based on its potential for future success and financial returns in the market to enter. More details of the final project will be announced in class in the first week. Please submit your PPT file to the instructing professor via email before the final exam. 2. Exams and Quizzes: Final exam. 3. Evaluation and Grading Policy: Final exam: 10%; Class participation:10%; Group project: 80%
