Course Description This course aims to introduce World Politics (also known as International Relations) to students. It introduces the substances, essential issues, and rationales of world politics. This course examines the core concepts and theories that scholars use to analyze and comprehend the dynamics underlying world politics. It also explores various interests of actors and institutions and their interactions that shape the complexities of world politics. We live in an increasingly globalized society, which generates both new opportunities and challenges. Nowadays, no countries and people are isolated from the outside world. The significance of the course is to enhance students’ interests and abilities in understanding how the global society is composed of, operated, and governed, which helps facilitate students’ sense of being global citizens and, meanwhile, expand their global visions. This course contains several sub-fields: the foundation of IR, war and peace, international political economy, transnational relations, and future prospects. This course will adopt various learning activities (e.g., course quizzes, question-oriented discussions, peer-evaluation activities) to help students reach the learning objectives of this course. The assessment is designed to evaluate how students perform in accordance with the learning objectives of this course. Course Objectives 1. Develop a basic understanding of world politics and constant attention to international news. 2. Familiarize with and utilize different perspectives and theories to comprehend world politics. 3. To stimulate students' learning interests in this course, this course adopts a question-oriented teaching style by asking an intriguing question and asking a pair of students to discuss possible answers based on their experiences and existing knowledge. After inviting some students to share their answers with the class to compare their differences, the lecturer will give a lecture introducing theories relevant to the question. Then, the lecturer asks students to reflect and revise their original answers after receiving new inputs, revealing their learning progress. Finally, the lecturer utilizes interactive technology tools to facilitate their discussion and evaluate students' abilities of comprehension, application, analysis, and synthesis.

Nevertheless, to enhance students' comprehension of the subjects, students are encouraged to participate in various activities in the class, including class discussion, instant Internet poll surveys, quizzes, group activities, etc. All forms of class participation will be considered as proof for evaluating students' class participation. This course expects students to read the assigned readings before the class. Meanwhile, students are also encouraged to participate in class discussions actively. This course will evaluate the performances of students' participation by both the quality and quantity of students' statements. Students are encouraged to express their viewpoints, logical arguments, and constructive critique, which are relevant and productive to the class discussion. In order to motivate students' interests and participation in the class, this course has designed various class activities for students to attend. To achieve this goal, students must bring electronic devices (such as cellphones, tablets, and notebooks that can connect to the Internet) to participate in the quiz, dialogue partner, and group activities. Students who have difficulty accessing those devices must inform the instructor before class. Those class activities will be recorded as proof of students' performance in this item. Essay Paper (25%): Each student must select ONE topic from the course's outline and write ONE short paper (it will announce the writing format afterward). This essay paper should be logical and analytical, providing analysis and discussion about the critical issues, concepts, or phenomena related to one specific topic of this course. This paper should include a concise summary of the readings, a lecture reflection, and a critical analysis. A successful short essay should be question-oriented while providing a critical assessment and compelling arguments. All students need assistance from NYCU Language Teaching and Research Center's Language Consultation (http://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw/room/index.php) to improve their English composition and proofreading before handing in the paper. Students who want to be exempt from this required assistance in writing composition must inform the professor before the 10th week of the course and provide proof of English composition capability. Examination (30%): There will be ONE Mid-term Exam in the course. This exam will be composed of single-choice, multiple-choice, term explanation, and essay questions. Coherent writing and critical thinking are essential to high exam scores. The essay questions do not aim to test students' English writing ability but to assess students' comprehension regarding subjects, contents of readings, and abilities to write compelling arguments and analyses. The contents of the examination come from the assigned readings and the lectures in the class. Therefore, this course encourages students to take notes in class, which is beneficial for students to prepare for the exam. Group Presentation (25%): This course will divide students into several teams for group presentation. Each group will elect a team leader responsible for organizing the team and leading their members to perform the group presentation. This course expects each group to choose one week's subject as the focus of their presentation. Under the selected topic, each group can choose a specific issue, case, phenomenon, etc. Then, each group should perform an oral presentation with PowerPoint within 15 minutes.
