概述

課程概述與目標: This course aims to develop students' general English proficiency at the B2 level, with an emphasis on reading and speaking skills. Approximately 50% of the course content is related to academic contexts. It is designed to enhance students' English reading comprehension and develop oral discussion skills based on reading adapted texts. In this class, students will read adapted texts with enhanced fluency and effective use of reading strategies. Oral discussion skills will be practiced in a variety of formats (e.g. small group discussions and role play). A focus on the pronunciation of keywords and application vocabulary or sentence structures presented in reading will be highlighted. By the end of the course, students will learn to: - work out the meaning of difficult words from contexts - take notes using one' s own words - use reading strategies to accomplish reading goals - speak with confidence - express personal opinions orally - ask and answer questions appropriately - lead and participate in group discussions - present key points about integrated information - speak from notes - deliver oral presentations using visual aids

先修科目

The lecturer will explain the syllabus in detail on the first day of class. The syllabus will also be uploaded to e 3. It is the students’ responsibility to browse the syllabus by themselves first and take full responsibility of knowing what’s expected of them in this class. Students who do not show up on the first day of class without any proper reason will be removed from the list.

教學方式

1. Students should check the syllabus and materials uploaded by the instructor on the assigned database first instead of keeping emailing the instructor asking questions. If students have questions, he or she should stay after each class to ask the instructor face to face. 2. Students should participate in class actively. 40 points will be deducted from the attendance score if you skip one class and 20 points will be deducted from the attendance score if you are 20 minutes late each time. If you skip the class 3 times, both of your attendance score and participation score will be zero points. 3. Students who are sick or have other emergencies can ask for a leave via NYCU Students Leave System and inform the instructor face-to-face next time in class. However, constant asking for sick leave such as headaches, stomachaches etc. without any proof is viewed as excuses and will not be accepted by the instructor. 4. No late assignments will be accepted unless you have legitimate and proper reasons to inform the instructor beforehand. This course will mainly focus on students’ active analytical reading comprehension of different reading articles and help students improve greatly in their English oral expression! The instructor will also use related videos to help students stimulate more ideas in response to discussions. Students should participate in the class actively and ask the teacher in person if he or she has trouble understanding the teacher’s written instructions. If students skip the class more than 3 times without any proper reason, he or she will receive 0 points on participation and attendance. No late assignments and exams will be accepted as students should be aware of the deadlines set by the teacher unless valid proof is presented. Textbook readings and other resources might be assigned to students to read at home first.
