GENERAL GUIDELINE: Course Goals and Target Level - All courses should aim to develop students' academic English proficiency at CEFR B2 level. - 80% of the course content is academic in nature (lectures, academic articles, discussions, reports, presentations, etc.). - The focus is on preparing students for academic study, including critical thinking, sourcebased communication, and genre-specific tasks. Core Learning Objectives (aligned across courses) By the end of each course, students should be able to: - Understand and synthesize spoken and written academic texts - Engage in oral and/or written academic communication using appropriate structure, register, and vocabulary - Express and justify opinions or arguments with academic support (sources, evidence) - Demonstrate the ability to analyze, evaluate, and integrate information from multiple sources - Use a range of academic skills such as note-taking, paraphrasing, summarizing, outlining, and referencing Assessment To evaluate students' academic English proficiency at the B2 level, a mix of formative and summative assessments targeting academic language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and critical thinking abilities should be applied. Suggested assessments include: - Academic Listening and Reading Quizzes Description: Quizzes based on academic lectures, talks, articles, and reports. Assessment Focus: Identifying main ideas, note-taking, recognizing arguments, analyzing structure. Format: Multiple choice, short answers, note-taking assessments. - Academic Writing Tasks Description: Students produce academic paragraphs, essays, summaries, and source-based writing. Assessment Focus: Organization, use of academic vocabulary, citation skills (APA/MLA/Chicago), critical analysis. Format: In-class essays, take-home assignments, research summaries. - Oral Presentations and Discussions Description: Students deliver formal academic presentations or lead and participate in discussions based on source materials. Assessment Focus: Clarity, structure, use of academic language, integration of sources. Format: Individual or group academic presentations, panel discussions, debates. Critical Reading and Analysis Assignments Description: Students analyze academic articles, identify authors' perspectives, and evaluate arguments. Assessment Focus: Critical thinking, synthesis, ability to distinguish fact vs. opinion. Format: Written responses, annotated readings, discussion participation. - Research-based Projects Description: Students work individually or in groups to produce mini research reports or presentations. Assessment Focus: Research skills, referencing, academic integrity, synthesis of multiple sources. Format: Written research papers (500–1000 words) or research presentations. - Reflective Journals Description: Students reflect on their academic English learning process and challenges. Assessment Focus: Self-awareness, learning strategies, goal-setting. Format: Weekly or bi-weekly short entries.

Attendance 10% Attendance will be taken in each class. Being late for more than ten minutes is regarded as being absent for that hour. One point will be taken off from your final grade for each hour of absence. Participation 30 % Active participation is a must. This part includes in class group work and individual assignment. Mid-term exam (open-book exam)60 % This is an exam testing content from the textbook and the handout. Total 100%
