學術英文口語溝通

This course focuses on building academic English communication skills at the B2 level to prepare students for academic success. Approximately 80% of the course content is academic-related. Students will enhance their ability to understand extended academic spoken texts and express ideas clearly and effectively in academic discussions and presentations. The course emphasizes the development of coherent speech, argumentation, critical thinking, and the integration of spoken and visual information in an academic context. By the end of the course, students will learn to: - understand extended spoken academic texts (e.g., lectures, discussions) and identify key ideas, supporting details, and speaker attitudes - follow complex lines of academic argument, recognizing the structure and rhetorical functions (e.g., cause-effect, comparison, stance) - make informed inferences based on discourse features, including intonation, word choice, and contextual cue - synthesize spoken input with visual materials (e.g., charts, diagrams) to interpret and convey meaning accurately - participate actively in academic discussions, expressing and justifying opinions, comparing viewpoints, and responding to questions - deliver clear, well-organized academic presentations on abstract topics, incorporating evidence and appropriate rhetorical strategies - summarize and present information from multiple sources coherently, demonstrating logical reasoning and effective language use

1. Class materials will be uploaded to the E3 platform (https://e3.nycu.edu.tw/) 2. Active participation is required. Attendance will be taken in each class. Please join the class on time. Being late for more than twenty minutes is regarded as being absent for that hour. TWO POINTS will be taken off from your final grade for each hour of absence. Students are welcome to bring in their personal experience in public speaking and presentation as well as share their methods of improving the subject matter. 3. If you are absent due to uncontrollable situations, such as acute/severe illness, emergency, important occasions, etc., please file your application along with the valid proof on NYCU Students Leave System within 1 week. The medication receipt with correct stamp of date by accredited hospitals can be seen as a valid proof. The instructor reserves the right to refuse or revoke leave of absence application. Absence from a class is no excuse for not knowing the assignment and what has been discussed in class. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what has been covered in the class by checking E3 or getting handouts/notes from the classmates. No late work will be accepted (unless you have requested an extension and been given approval ahead of the deadline).

(1) Class participation and attendance (10%) This part includes attendance, in-class work, and discussions. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up assignments. (2) Weekly assignments (38%) There are weekly assignments in various forms, such as quizzes on Google Forms, note-taking, audio recordings, and video recordings. (3) Midterm Exam (20%) The first task is a 20 minute listening exam which will generate a score out of 100. The second task is a listening and speaking task where you will use an AI text to speech software (such as Speechify) to produce listening audio; then, you will be assessed on your ability to shadow the pronunciation which will be scored via a rubric out of 100 points. (4) Impromptu Speaking (10%) You will form groups of 4-5. Each member will take one role each round: speaker, ah counter, timer, evaluator. You will switch roles every round. (5) Academic presentation (15%) & Peer Feedback (5%) Students will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of their choice. Your final presentation topic and outline will be reviewed and discussed at the in-class individual conference in Week 14th. Be creative and use the skills learnt in class. (6) English Table (2%) (All the LTRC activities start from Week 3. ) Each student is required to attend at least 2 sessions of English Table held by NYCU Language Self-study Center (for more information: https://lssc.web.nycu.edu.tw/%e8%8b%b1%e8%aa%9e%e6%9c%83%e8%a9%b1%e5%9c%93%e6%a1%8cenglish-table/ ). You need to collect a stamp on the VOD Passport after each session you attend or collect any evidence for participation during the activity.
