The course is designed to improve students' English writing ability to an academic level. Approximately 80% of the course content is academic-related. Students will learn the concepts of a paragraph and an essay and be guided to integrate information from credible sources into their writing. The course will also introduce students to common academic writing tasks used across disciplines. Additional focuses include critical thinking, thesis development, organization, coherence, and language accuracy. Through lectures, interactive activities, and practical exercises, students will learn to 1. integrate information from different sources 2. summarize and paraphrase information from sources 3. develop clear arguments 4. write well-structured paragraphs, essays, and other academic writing tasks (e.g., data commentary) 5. organize ideas coherently 6. express ideas in clear English using vocabulary, grammar, transitions, or sentence structures that demonstrate appropriate academic style 7. refer to sources in written work and write a bibliography/references section 8. revise and proofread written work 9. engage in oral discussions and presentations related to the writing tasks Please note that although this is a writing-focused course, academic English speaking components will be integrated into in-class activities and assessment. Students will be required to participate in oral discussions and deliver oral presentations related to the writing tasks.

Attendance & Class Participation 15% Absences from class cannot be an excuse for missing important announcements or late assignments. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed (e.g., check New E3 or get notes and handouts from peers). Attendance will be taken during each class. In-Class Discussions 10% Midterm and Final Exams 25% Midterm and final exams will cover the content related to the materials presented in class and assignments. Some parts of the exam will be closed book, while the others will be open book. Self-Study Center Activity Reflection Passages 5% Each student is required to attend 2 activities held by the Language Self-Study Center (https://lssc.web.nycu.edu.tw/) or the NYCU Office of Bilingual Education. You may choose the activities that interest you, for example, English Tables, English Writing Consultation, and English Book Club. After participating in each activity, you will submit a reflection passage. A specific writing guideline will be posted to New E3. Writing Portfolio 30% You will submit approximately 5 written assignments throughout the semester. Please see the course schedule for the deadlines to submit the assignments. Feedback will be provided. You can revise your assignments according to the feedback and include your revisions in the portfolio. At the end of the semester, you will organize and compile all the written assignments, including initial drafts and revisions, in a writing portfolio. Mini-Research Presentations 15%
