概述

Course Goals and Target Level - This course aims to develop students' academic English proficiency at CEFR B2 level. - At least 80% of the course content must be academic in nature (lectures, academic articles, discussions, reports, presentations, etc.). - The focus is on preparing students for academic study, including critical thinking, source- based communication, and genre-specific tasks. Core Learning Objectives (aligned across courses) By the end of each course, students should be able to: - Understand and synthesize spoken and written academic texts - Engage in oral and/or written academic communication using appropriate structure, register, and vocabulary - Express and justify opinions or arguments with academic support (sources, evidence) - Demonstrate the ability to analyze, evaluate, and integrate information from multiple sources - Use a range of academic skills such as note-taking, paraphrasing, summarizing, outlining, and referencing Assessment To evaluate students' academic English proficiency at the B2 level, a mix of formative and summative assessments targeting academic language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and critical thinking abilities should be applied. Suggested assessments include: - Academic Listening and Reading Quizzes Description: Quizzes based on academic lectures, talks, articles, and reports. Assessment Focus: Identifying main ideas, note-taking, recognizing arguments, analyzing structure. Format: Multiple choice, short answers, note-taking assessments. - Academic Writing Tasks Description: Students produce academic paragraphs, essays, summaries, and source-based writing. Assessment Focus: Organization, use of academic vocabulary, citation skills (APA/MLA/Chicago), critical analysis. Format: In-class essays, take-home assignments, research summaries. - Oral Presentations and Discussions Description: Students deliver formal academic presentations or lead and participate in discussions based on source materials. Assessment Focus: Clarity, structure, use of academic language, integration of sources. Format: Individual or group academic presentations, panel discussions, debates. - Critical Reading and Analysis Assignments Description: Students analyze academic articles, identify authors' perspectives, and evaluate arguments. Assessment Focus: Critical thinking, synthesis, ability to distinguish fact vs. opinion. Format: Written responses, annotated readings, discussion participation. - Research-based Projects Description: Students work individually or in groups to produce mini research reports or presentations. Assessment Focus: Research skills, referencing, academic integrity, synthesis of multiple sources. Format: Written research papers (500–1000 words) or research presentations. - Reflective Journals Description: Students reflect on their academic English learning process and challenges. Assessment Focus: Self-awareness, learning strategies, goal-setting. Format: Weekly or bi-weekly short entries. Course Overview & Objectives: This course is designed for students who are interested in studying abroad. The course focuses on academic study skills to make your study abroad experiences beneficial. In the course, you will develop authentic listening, note-taking, academic discussion, and presentation strategies that you need to be successful academically in foreign universities. You will learn about specific knowledge and skills to better understand lectures and predict content. This course will also assist you to use a visual to form and organize ideas into a chart to get the gist of your reading. The instructor will provide practical strategies for you to engage in a group or whole classroom discussions. Ultimately, while building your vocabulary and improving your language skills to achieve your academic goals, the instructor will introduce essential presentation strategies for you to deliver your ideas effectively and build rapport with your audience. Supplemental reading materials which ranges from campus life English will be provided based on your needs. • Listening Strategies: - Building background knowledge to better understand lectures and predict content. - Recognizing lecture language that signals: the topic/the big picture/a transition/a definition/an example/an explanation/important information. - Recognizing non-verbal signals for important information. • Note-taking Strategies: - Using symbols and abbreviations instead of full words. - Assessing, revising and editing your notes. - Using a visual form and Organizing ideas into a chart. - Referencing and quoting sources. • Academic Discussion Strategies: - Entering a discussion and Contributing ideas. - Agreeing and disagreeing. - Connecting your ideas to those of other students. - Bringing the group to a consensus. • Presentation Strategies: - Presentation structure. - Delivery style and using language effectively. - Building rapport with your audience. - Visual aids/Referring to charts and graphs.

2.教學方法及教學相關配合事項(如助教、網站或圖書及資料庫等) This course is student-centered. This means you are invited to be “Masters” not “Guests”.  Preparation: You are required to read/scan the textbook or handouts before class.  Participation: Active participation in classroom discussions and activities is essential to advance your English skills.  Assignments & Tests: No late work will be accepted, and no make-up tests will be given unless it is for an official reason with prior approval.  Attendance: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to learn what was done in class that day. Every absence will lower your attendance grade by 2 points (final score). More than 3 unexcused absences may cause you to fail the course.  Exams: The mid-term (oral 40% / written exam 60%) will focus on reading comprehension, short answering questions, listening comprehension and speaking skills.
