概述

This 16-week course is designed to support students enrolled in the General Biology English-medium-instruction course (EMI 普通生物-英語授課) or those looking to develop their academic and professional English skills for biology-related content. By developing their English skills specific to academic purposes in biology, the course aims to improve students' ability to understand, present, and communicate biology concepts effectively in both written and spoken English. Key focus areas include: ● Reading strategies for scientific texts ● Lecture comprehension and note-taking ● Participation in academic discussions ● Oral presentation skills ● Scientific essay writing By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Use appropriate reading strategies to read and comprehend biology textbooks and research articles. 2. Communicate and interpret biological knowledge in connection to real-life situations in English. 3. Demonstrate professional scientific skills, including observation, interpretation, and critical thinking, in both written and spoken tasks. 4. Develop and present coherent and structured oral and written reports on biological topics. 5. Engage in teamwork and leadership roles during group tasks, utilizing English as a tool for learning and collaboration.

先修科目

CEFR B1 or above. Students enrolled in EMI General Biology or seeking to strengthen academic English for biology-related studies are welcome. Motivated learners aiming to develop integrated scientific listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills will benefit. The course supports progression toward B2 or above. 具 CEFR B1 以上英語程度。修習 EMI 普通生物或希望強化生物相關學術英語者歡迎選修。適合有動機整合發展科學情境下聽說讀寫能力之學生,希望協助進步至 B2或以上

◎ Implement task-based and active learning strategies aligned with the General Biology curriculum ◎ Integrate AI and technology for personalized, guided, and collaborative learning ◎ Incorporate multimodal and multiliteracy approaches ◎ Foster reflective practices and metacognitive strategies through self-assessments and peer feedback sessions ◎ Design authentic assessments that mirror EMI classroom and real-world scientific communication

ESAP Learning Tasks (simulate ESAP tasks in the EMI course) - 70% ◎ Reading and listening note-taking assignments - 10% Develop effective reading and listening strategies by taking comprehensive notes from assigned texts and lectures. ◎ Group mini-lecture presentation (15 minutes) - 15% Collaborate with your group to deliver a structured mini-lecture on a selected biological topic. ◎ One-page written report: "Plant growth observation and analysis" - 15% Write a concise report documenting the growth process and observations of your selected plant. ◎ 10-minute video presentation: "Plant growth observation and analysis" - 15% Create and present a video detailing the plant growth process and observations, with a focus on clarity and scientific accuracy. ◎ Mock exam essay writing - 10% Practice responding to exam-style essay questions, demonstrating your ability to explain and apply biological concepts clearly. 3. Peer Evaluation and Self-Reflection Activities - 10% ◎ Engage in peer evaluations and complete self-reflection tasks to assess your performance and learning progress post-ESAP tasks. 4. Self-Directed Language Enhancement Activities - 15% Please provide evidence of any of the following: ◎ Quizizz biology vocabulary learning ◎ EdPuzzle biology videos ◎ Self-study center activities

第 15 週Writing and Reviewing Scientific Essays Review sessions to improve essay structure, argumentation, and scientific clarity.
第 16 週Course Recap and Final Assessment Final self-evaluation, course feedback, and reflection on the ESAP learning experience and its application to future studies.
