This course is meant to help students enter daily and academic conversations with greater ease and confidence. We will use TED talks and other audiovisual aids to broaden our vocabulary, enhance our listening and speaking skills, practice note-taking, and generate relevant conversations. Topics include global issues addressed by the United Nations, such as climate change and environmental action, gender equality, and food security, as well as issues relevant to our discipline—such as language, literature, and communication. At the same time, we will have a variety of in-class activities to encourage students to be creative and express themselves. Students are expected to learn new vocabulary and carry on relevant conversations in English.

Attendance and Participation One point out of 20 will be deducted from your attendance and participation score for each hour of class missed without a valid excuse. Legitimate excuses include documented sick leave, official leave, mental health leave, and, in some cases, personal leave for unavoidable exams, interviews, or other responsibilities that cannot be rescheduled. Active participation is also critical. Perfect attendance does not automatically guarantee a full 20 points. Quizzes There will be four quizzes throughout the term, and your highest three scores will enter the final score. There will be no makeup quizzes. Since only your highest three quiz scores count, one missed quiz may be treated as the quiz score that is dropped. If you miss more than one quiz, any additional missed quiz will receive 0 points unless there are exceptional circumstances approved by the instructor. Preparation Students are expected to watch or listen to the assigned materials before class and take their own notes. Online transcripts may be used for preparation, but they should not replace listening practice. Please come to class ready to summarize main ideas, ask questions, and participate in discussion. Midterm and Final Exams You may be asked to record a short speech, answer some listening comprehension questions, and/or take a written test. Accommodations This course is committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible learning environment. If you require accommodations, please contact the appropriate campus services and inform me as early as possible. Together, we will ensure that you have the support and resources necessary for success. Final Scores Once your final score is ready, I will send a group email via E3. Shortly afterward, each of you will receive a personal email with a grade breakdown. If you have any concerns about your score, please contact me within 24 hours. If I do not hear from you, I will assume that you accept the grade as final.
