This course introduces freshmen to canonical texts from different literary genres. Over the semester, students will develop basic skills in literary analysis, become familiar with major literary conventions, acquire cultural literacy, and explore the social, political, and cultural issues addressed in our readings. ** Please note that the current schedule is not final.

Attendance and Participation Once you pick up your seat, you may not change it. You will be asked to write your name on the seating chart. Our teaching assistant (to be announced) will use the chart to record attendance. If you miss one hour of class without any legitimate leave—or arrive more than 10 minutes late—the TA will deduct one point from your attendance score (10 points in total). Acceptable excuses include documented sick leave, official leave, or mental health leave. If you have questions about your attendance, please consult the TA during breaks and provide official records from the Attendance System. While I appreciate email notifications in advance or during emergencies, the TA will track your attendance. Approximately every two weeks, the TA will inform you of any missed hours. Please note that perfect attendance does not automatically guarantee the full attendance and participation score. Active participation in class discussions is expected. You should be prepared to contribute to discussion and respond to questions during class. Quizzes We will usually have one quiz every two or three weeks, depending on the pace of the course. We will have at least five quizzes this semester. Your highest four quiz scores will count toward your quiz grade. If you are absent on the day of a quiz, you will receive 0 points for that quiz. No make-up quizzes will be given. Midterm and Final Exams Each exam usually consists of two parts. The first part tests your familiarity with the assigned readings. You may be asked to define literary terms, identify passages, and answer questions about the texts we have studied. The second part evaluates your ability to apply the analytical tools learned in this course to a new text. You will be asked to analyze a passage or a poem using the concepts and methods discussed in class. Make-up exams for the midterm and final exams are generally not allowed. Exceptions may be granted only in cases of serious illness, family emergency, or official university obligations, and documentation is required (such as a medical note or an official notice from the university). If you anticipate an official conflict with the exam schedule, you must inform the instructor in advance and provide appropriate documentation. If an emergency prevents you from attending an exam, you must notify the instructor as soon as possible and provide documentation afterward. Without proper documentation, the missed exam will receive a score of 0. Accommodations This course is committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible learning environment. If you require accommodations, please contact the appropriate campus office and inform me as early as possible. Together, we will work to ensure that you receive the support and resources necessary for success in this course. Final Scores When final scores are ready, I will send a group email through E3. Shortly afterward, each student will receive a personal email with a detailed grade breakdown. If you have concerns about your score, please contact me within 24 hours of receiving the email. If I do not hear from you within that time frame, I will assume that you accept the grade as final.
