This course introduces the thermodynamic principles needed to understand materials behavior, phase stability, gases, and phase equilibria. Topics include the laws of thermodynamics, entropy, free energies, heat capacity, chemical potential, and phase diagrams. By the end of the semester, students will be able to: • Apply the First, Second, and Third Laws of Thermodynamics to materials systems. • Calculate changes in U, H, S, A, and G. • Interpret unary phase diagrams using Gibbs free energy. • Analyze ideal and non-ideal gas behavior
Calculus and general physics.
• Quizzes (4-5): 20% • Midterm Exam: 40% • Final Exam: 40%
