This course introduces core theories, models, and pedagogical strategies in ESP (English for Specific Purposes), emphasizing disciplinary literacy in English collaboration between English teachers and subject-content EMI or bilingual teachers. Students will critically examine ESP frameworks, conduct needs analyses, explore curriculum and materials design, and implement an ESP module for a Taiwanese senior high school bilingual program. The course balances theory and practice, equipping students to design, implement, and reflect on ESP teaching in real-world contexts, with special attention to AI and multimodal strategies. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Explain key concepts and frameworks in ESP, including disciplinary literacy and ESP-EMI collaboration. 2. Conduct needs analysis to inform ESP course and materials design. 3. Design learning-oriented assessments and instructional tasks aligned with EMI ILOs and ESP principles. 4. Apply unpacking and repacking strategies and MEC (Multimodal Entextualization Cycle) for disciplinary literacy development. 5. Collaborate to design and implement an ESP module for high school bilingual programs. 6. Reflect critically on ESP teaching practice using theory-informed analysis.
This course is suitable for graduate students and advanced undergraduates (senior standing) who are interested in developing professional knowledge and practical skills to build fluency, confidence, and expertise in ESP theory and practice.
Teaching Methods and Related Arrangements Overview This course uses a blended, interactive approach with the following key components: 1. Student-led textbook presentations to foster critical discussion and peer learning 2. Weekly self-directed learning tasks to deepen understanding and promote reflection 3. ESP module design and implementation for high school bilingual programs 4. Peer feedback and collaborative learning through digital platforms like Padlet 5. AI and digital tools integration (e.g., ChatGPT, Gamma) for task design and material creation 6. Learning portfolio to document progress and showcase growth
1. ESP Book Chapter Presentation & Discussion Facilitation 20% 2. Weekly Self-Directed Learning Tasks (Reading Reflections, Design Exercises) 30% 3. ESP Module Design, Implementation & Analysis Reflection (高中雙語實驗班) 30% 4. Class Engagement & Learning Portfolio (Participation, Notes, Peer Feedback) 20%
